San Francisco Green Vacation Travel

From the 60's, San Francisco has been known as a leader in political activism. The city most associated with flower power and Haight Ashbury will forever be known as a place where consciousness is raised, environmental and otherwise. With Alcatraz in the heart of San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge spanning the entrance and people of all sorts living in such close proximity, you might think that it's a city more oriented towards technology than environmentalism, but the opposite is often true.

The city has a unique history and a full understanding of how nature can act and impact life. There is constantly a very real threat of earthquakes that have done major damage to the city in the past. Of course, the major damage from the big quake from just after the turn of the 20th century was actually done by broken gas mains. This led to one of the earliest environmental efforts to secure power and prevent such future catastrophes.

San Francisco is home to some of the most progressive and innovative environmental legislation of any city in the country. From the creation of their own Department of the Environment to having the most "green jobs" of anywhere in the country. Over 125,000 jobs have been generated in the green field in the bay area.

In the San Francisco area you can find everything from farmers markets, biodiesel stations, recycling centers, reuse programs, local environmental and community groups, bike lanes, alternative transport options, green architecture, renewable energy, cable cars and protected habitats. Golden Gate Park, the crookedest road in America (technically not true, but really cool), Chinatown, Fisherman's Wharf, and so many other places in close proximity that your carbon footprint is reduced simply by keeping you from needing to travel too much from your destination.
