When traveling it's important to have a place to stay that keeps environmental concerns in their decision making. There are a variety of important questions that you can ask. Consider these questions and feel free to request information from your hotel to determine how well they consider the environment in their procedures.
1) What is the hotel recycling program? One of the most obvious ways that a hotel can quickly help reduce environmental aspect is to recycle. Having a better understanding of the hotels' program will allow you to better know the concern they show for the environment.
2) What do they do to conserve energy? There are many things that can be done by a hotel to save energy. The hotel can use compact flourescent light bulbs. Having modern appliances that are more energy efficient save a lot of power. Hot water pipes should be insulated and the thermostat can be lowered on most water heaters and yet still be comfortable (or more modern laser water heaters can be utilized).
3) What do they do to insulate the building? The hotel can save a lot of energy by simply closing blinds, reducing termostats or using nature to heat rooms.
4) Are they technologically environmental? Using laptops instead of desktops, inkjets instead of laser printers, and keeping equipment off or on standby mode when not in use can make a large difference.
5) Do they take proactive measures to make positive things happen? Beyond simple recycling, there are things that the hotel can do to assist in helping the community. Among other things, the hotel can provide their materials to local charities. From food to soaps and shampoos are all needed by local charities and are better used than simply winding up in landfills.
Beyond these questions, there are things that you can do to more actively reduce the environmental impact of your stay.
1) Request that your towels and linens not be changed.
2) Turn off lights and reduce your heating/cooling usage.
3) Take quick showers.
